Description:

Stem cell factor (SCF)/mast cell growth factor (MGF) or kit ligand (Accession P21583), like CX3CL1 can exist as both a transmembrane and soluble protein. SCF is vital to hematopoiesis (especially during embryonic development), spermatogenesis, and melanogenesis. For normal hematopoiesis, both transmembrane and soluble forms must be present. SCF is expressed by stromal cells and fibroblasts. It promotes chemotaxis, mast cell secretory function, and can aide mediators in responses to IgE-dependent activation. Diseases associated with this include hyperpigmentation and testicular non-seminomatous germ cell tumor.
